Harry Potter Tank Top

August 28, 2019

As you guys know, Ellie & Mac Patterns is my go-to pattern company when I need a cute but simple sewing win. Since finishing my jeans earlier this month, simple wins have been the name of the game for me, and this tank looked like it would check those boxes! The Floral Dreams Tank is a new-this-year release from Ellie & Mac, and comes with a couple different options – a higher scoop neckline, this lower “triangle” neckline, and a straight or skirted hem option. I chose to make the triangle neckline, paired with the straight bodice for a simple, cute tank I can throw on with any bottoms this summer. I’m hoping this will also work great with jeans and a crimson cardigan, when autumn comes around in a month or two!

The pattern has some great details – a facing that helps decrease bulk where the loops are connected in the back, the neckline binding, the armhole binding that extends into the straps. All really lovely bits! Of course, the binding does mean that you’ll have to do a little work to MAKE the binding! After making my Calvin top recently, I at least knew ahead of time that this would be a super simple but time consuming piece of the tank construction. I also knew that spray starch is my best friend when it comes to binding, and it was especially helpful to keep creases in this spongy knit, which otherwise wouldn’t have pressed particularly well.

This awesome pattern is called the Floral Dreams Tank, and as I was looking through inspiration photos, I kept seeing so many sewn up in fabulous watercolor floral print fabrics. Although I certainly have some great florals on my shelves, when I went digging around to pick the perfect fabric out of my stash, I couldn’t get my mind off of this awesome Harry Potter jersey knit from JoAnn. I LOVE Harry Potter, so when I saw this knit I purchased three yards of it right away… With no plan. LAST August! I was more than happy to finally bust out a project with it. I had fun planning the placement of the print on the pattern, and love the final result.

Now that I have the super cute Harry Potter tank I’ve always needed in my wardrobe, I’m starting to think some floral versions might be next on the agenda. This pattern is 50% off until the end of the month if you need a couple of cute, basic tanks in your wardrobe, as well!
